New Contributing Listener Area
Hi everybody,
I wanted to take this opportunity to let everybody know about a new feature here on the website. The new area is the contributing user area. The contributing user area is a place that from time to time I will add some extra content for the folks that have helped the show stay online. This content will not be available in the regular podcast feed.
There are two ways to get access to the contributing user area.
Be a regular contributer of content ( Articles, Audio, Video ) or make a contribution through the donate link to help pay for server fees and expenses to keep the show going. I have know way to track the Amazon and Audible stuff so it will have to be that way.
Those of you that have already done one of the two things above will be granted contributing user access as you sign up for the website. If I miss you please let me know. I have a file with the information of past contributers and all I will have to do is look it up.
This new area is a thank you for all of our faithful listeners and I hope you will enjoy it.
Thanks
Richard KB5JBV

Resonant Frequency On The Road
Some of you may have noticed that a few of the more recent episodes of Resonant Frequency have been a little more raw that shows in the past. That is because I have been trying to get more content into the feed but have less time that I had before. So I have started recording some of the episodes while I am at work. I had a change in employment a few months back and now I have the time at work to record a small episode here and there.
You might ask how I do this. Well I currently am idle at work unless something happens and in true amateur radio operator fashion I decided to to take advantage of it. I have installed both mobile VHF/UHF and HF stations in my truck. I have a laptop available and am working towards mobile broadband.
But what about recording? Well since the listeners of the show have always said the prefer a a show that is less scripted I decided to take a cue from another podcaster. Dave Yates at the Lotta Linux Links podcast records all of his shows mobile from his Honda Civic on his way home from work. he has a pretty good setup and even does interviews while on the road.
So I thought I would give it a try. Some time back I purchased an in expensive Sony digital audio recorder for the purposes of recording interviews outside of the studio. Any of you that have listened to the first Field Day show I did a couple of years back have heard audio taken with that device. I really wasn't pleased with the audio quality of that recorder. I also have three Sansa Clip audio players that are capable of recording audio files. I decided to use one of the Sansas. The Sansa Clips have very sensitive microphones but are a little bit directional. They tend to pick up little noises made by movement like pops from the clip on the back if you are holding them in your hand. So I found the sensitivity setting and set it on low. I then clipped it to my shirt about a foot from my mouth and this gave me a reasonable quality sound.
As I said before most of the listeners have indicated that they like a show that doesn't sound scripted. The only negative comments I here about another popular Ham podcast is that it sounds to mechanical. So I try to do most shows off au natural or just me talking. So I just pick a topic and talk. It is nice to have a little experience in the hobby to fall back on.
Well there you go. Studio 1M is the wifes van and is quiet enough for me to record in motion. Studio 2M is my truck and I have to be sitting still to record there. This is my solution to getting more content into the feed for you folks. When I get the website to the point I can post a few pictures I will get some on here so you can see the equipment.
Thanks for listening and it is great to be back in business.

If you're interested in their products, please use the link on the Resonant Frequency page to visit their site. Traffic on the Amazon.com link has also slowed. Remember, it doesn't cost you anything more to use the link on our web site, and we receive a small portion of the sale. |
| 04:10 | The ARRL West Gulf Division Convention, Ham-Com, was June 11-12. If any of you were there, send an email relating your experience. Field Day is fast approaching, and that will be the main topic of this episode. |
|
| 5:21 | Richard has his D-Star radio in the truck and will be monitoring quite a bit on the weekends. Look for him on the 1C reflector. Resonant Frequency is getting involved in the North Texas Section Manager election. Send in your thoughts about the election. If you're in that section, consider running for office. |
|
| 07:54 | Topic | Things to do on Field Day. Perhaps you'd rather not spend Field Day sitting outside operating a radio. What else can you do? Field Day is a great opportunity to visit many different amateur radio clubs in a short time. The ARRL web site has a Field Day Station Locator page that shows the Field Day stations operating near you. There is also a searchable list of ARRL-affiliated radio clubs to help you locate clubs in your area. By visiting the club's Field Day activities, you should be able to quickly determine how friendly and open that club will be. Field Day is also an opportunity to accumulate contacts toward awards, like Worked All States or DXCC. |
| 22:42 | Richard reminisces about his Field Day operations. If you do attend a Field Day, send an email about your experiences. |
|
| 28:15 | Conclusion | Send feedback about the show, the web site, or anything else. Email Richard at kb5jbv@gmail.com Twitter: twitter.com/kb5jbv Identica: http://identi.ca/kb5jbv KB5JBV on D-Star via port C on the NE5R repeater. Closing theme music is "We Gotta Go" by David Henderson at Podsafe Audio. |

Show Notes Episode 041
| 00:00 | Opening Theme | "Give It All Away", by midliFeCrisis, from the album "Live from the Loft" |
| 00:54 | Introduction | Recording live from the vehicle, Dave Yates style. Migration to the web hosting service is complete, though some things were lost. If you were signed up for an account on the old site, you'll need to sign up again. After a long hiatus, Resonant Frequency is back. Tell your friends. If you're on iTunes, new episodes should arrive automatically. Otherwise, visit the web site and get the new feed. To contact Richard, use kb5jbv@gmail.com. |
| 04:51 | Dayton | The Dayton Hamvention is coming up. Look for the Linux in the Ham Shack table at Dayton and say hello to Russ, K5TUX. Unfortunately, Richard will not be able to attend due to job commitments. (We'll miss you! -Ed.) |
| 05:14 | Thanks, again, to Jerry Taylor for his kind remarks about us on his podcast, The Practical Amateur Radio Podcast. There are a number of good amateur radio podcasts, now. Some are: |
|
| 06:08 | This episode is being recorded on a Sansa Clip while Richard is driving. Apologies for any pops and clicks. | |
| 07:12 | Song | "Funky Way" by Mark Hummel, from the album "Retro-Active". |
| 11:52 | Rant | VHF Wasteland Every VHF and UHF repeater pair within 70 miles of the Dallas/Ft. Worth area is taken. So, why can't you find someone to talk to after 11:00pm? Years ago, that was not the case. Is the 2m band dead at night in your area? Any idea why? Let me know. Around here, 2m is busy at drive times, and a few nets in the evening, but after that, nothing. If we don't use it, we'll lose it. |
| 26:05 | Song | "Smack Talkin' Mama" by Ray Campi, Kevin Fennell from the album "Hard Rockin' Head Knockin'" |
| 31:11 | Conclusion | Send feedback about show, web site, anything else. Email Richard at kb5jbv@gmail.com Twitter: twitter.com/kb5jbv Identica: http://identi.ca/kb5jbv KB5JBV on D-Star via port C on the NE5R repeater. Closing theme music is "We Gotta Go" by David Henderson at Podsafe Audio. |
